Worm shaft repair process
Tools and materials needed:
• Welder (DC) with adjustable output current
• A suitable welding rod
• Silicon carbide grinding disc
• Slaked lime or plant ash (for cooling)
• Temperature measuring device
Worm shaft repair steps:
1) Heating the end of the worm shaft: Heat the area to be repaired on the end of the propeller to
approximately 350 °C. This is a key preparatory step for the metal to be welded.
2) Preparation for welding: Set the welder to a current of about 150 A. Select the correct welding rod for
the material to be welded.
3) Welding: Apply the weld in layers to rebuild the worn front nose of the bolt.
Make sure that:
• Each layer is clean and free of welding slag before the next one is applied.
• The total thickness of the applied weld seam exceeds the required thickness by 1-2 mm.
• Welding is accurate, avoiding defects such as slag inclusions and porosity.
4) Cooling of the welded area: Place the welded part of the bolt in dry slaked lime or plant ash for cooling.
Allow the element to cool down to 50 °C or lower. Gradual cooling helps to prevent welding stresses
and cracks.
5) Screw grinding: Use a green silicon carbide grinding wheel to smooth the welded surface.
Take care to:
• Avoid exerting too much pressure, which could cause local overheating.
• Avoid the use of water or other cooling fluids while grinding.
6) Front bevel angle adjustment: While grinding, gradually adjust the front bevel angle around the helical
end of the screw, reaching an angle of 22° ±1.5°. Make sure the adjustment is smooth, without creating
dents or unevenness.
7) Shaft neck wear inspection: If the bolt shaft neck wear exceeds 6 mm, please follow the provided repair
process.
8) Maintenance after repair: Avoid hitting or shaking the freshly repaired bolt to prevent damage. Store
the worm shaft in a safe and dry place.
Tips :
• Make sure all tools and materials are prepared and in good condition before starting repair.
• Always prioritise safety by wearing the appropriate protective equipment and following safety protocols
when welding and grinding.
• It is recommended that you practice repair work on an item that is no longer fit for use before
proceeding with the actual repair.
Lubrication
• Check the oil level regularly and top up if necessary.
• It is recommended to top up the oil every 3 months.
• Oil type: 5W30.
• Do not add more than 200 ml of oil.
• If you hear a metallic noise, the oil may need to be changed
• The oil filling point is marked in the photo below:
