THREE IDENTICAL ROPES
For this trick you need three pieces of rope with the following lengths, 60, 40 and 20 cm. (You will nd a rope in your magic
tricks box but in case you don’t want to cut this rope in three pieces, any other kind of rope will do). Hold the ropes next
to each other in your left hand between your palm and thumb so that the upper ends of the ropes remain visible over the
edge of your hand. The short rope should be on the left end, the long rope on the right (Image 1). Now take the end of the
short rope from below, and position it in your palm between your thumb and index nger, beside the long rope (Image 2).
Do the same with the middle and long ropes (Images 3 and 4). You should now have six rope ends coming up over your
left hand. In a uid motion, take rope ends 3, 5, and 6 into your right hand. In this way, the positions of rope ends 3 and
4 switch places. With this motion, it is important to pass rope end 3 over rope end 4. Thus the shortest rope forms a loop
through which the longest rope is led (Image 5). Now pull apart both hands — you will automatically make the ropes the
same length, with the loop remaining hidden in your hand (Image 6).
PULLING A ROPE FROM YOUR MOUTH
You will need the rope and a pair of scissors. If you don’t want to cut the rope from your magic kit, you can use any other
kind of rope. Before the performance Cut a piece of rope approximately four inches long from the long rope. Stick the long
rope into your left sleeve so that you can easily reach one end with your ngers (Image 3). Then, put a small piece of the
short rope in your mouth. Before your audience’s eyes, pull the short piece of rope almost completely out of your mouth
(Image 4). Hold one of the ends between your teeth and let the other end hang down. Hold onto the piece that’s hanging
down in your left hand and use your right hand to pull the rope out of your left sleeve through the ngers of your left hand
(Image 5). As you pull the rope slowly out of your sleeve, it will look as if you’re pulling it out of your mouth. When the rope
comes all the way out of your sleeve, close your hand around both pieces of rope, hiding the part of the rope that you’re
actually pulling out of your mouth!
PULLING THE ROPE THROUGH THE WAND
Tie both ends of your rope together to make a loop. Now ask a member of your audience to hold the wand by both ends.
Clip the knotted end of the rope with 3rd and 4th ngers of your left hand and with your right hand loop the opposite end
of the rope under the wand and back up so it is next to your left hand. With your left nger and thumb secretly make a
circle around one of the pieces of rope in the right hand. Now very quickly let the knot fall from your left ngers and pull
your hands apart letting the rope slide through the circle made by your nger and thumb. Done quickly it will look like the
rope has passed through the wand.
THE IMPOSSIBLE KNOT
Can you make a knot in a rope without releasing the ends? Your audience will certainly think that it is impossible, but not
for you! Lay the rope down on the table and cross your arms in front of your chest, with your right hand resting on top of
your left bicep, and your left arm resting on top of your right arm, with the left hand under your right bicep. Pick up the
right end of the rope with your left hand, and the left end with your right hand. If you now unfold your arms from, a knot
will automatically form in the rope.
