Photovoltaic coverage
Subject to the type, heat pumps require defined minimum elec-
trical power to start heat production.
u Specify the proportion of the heat pump power to be
covered by the solar PV system when there is a photovoltaic
power surplus.
For energy management operation in winter months, we re-
commend that you select photovoltaic coverage of < 100%. This
is particularly useful in the case of small solar PV systems, be-
cause only minimal photovoltaic yields are expected in winter.
These are generally not enough to start the heat pump in heat-
ing mode.
If less than 100% photovoltaic coverage is specified, low photo-
voltaic power surpluses are also used in combination with
mains power for heat storage mode.
Recommendation for family homes with a solar PV system:
Rated photovoltaic output = 3kW
p
: 50%
Rated photovoltaic output > 6kW
p
: 100%
Optimisation of the power limit
Only relevant for "Maximum power feed-in" < 100%, also see
PV system [}16]
u Specify whether heat storage should be prioritised as soon
as feed-in exceeds the power limit for the solar PV system.
Energy control of heat pump operation can prevent photovoltaic
energy from being lost due to the specified limit. The available
heat stores are heated to a higher temperature using the avail-
able energy.
Recommendation: "On"
Weather forecast dependency
EMTrend uses a weather forecast to optimise heat pump opera-
tion for heat storage.
The later in the day the heat store is charged, the less energy is
lost through overnight heat losses. The outside temperature is
usually higher in the afternoon than in the morning. The heat
pump's heat storage is therefore more efficient in the afternoon.
However, the weather forecast for the system's location may not
always be correct. To minimise the risk of planning errors due
to a discrepancy in the weather forecast, you can set the
"Weather forecast dependency" according to the following
levels:
"OFF"
= EMTrend control is carried out exclusively accord-
ing to the electrical power measurement at the building's
mains connection point.
Currently available surplus PV power is used for heat stor-
age. If this occurs in the morning, heat storage efficiency is
not ideal due to lower outside temperatures. More heat
losses occur due to the longer standing time of the store.
"Medium"
and
"Low"
: these levels take account of the fore-
casts to a lesser extent. Currently available surplus PV
power is also used partly in the morning for heat storage.
"High"
: The heat pump bases heat storage entirely on the
operation schedule, calculated based on the weather fore-
cast.
Recommendation: "High"
Cooling with PV power only
Only available if the heat pump is able to cool. (Summer mode)
u Activate the parameter so that the heat pump only works in
cooling mode if there is sufficient photovoltaic power.
In small solar PV systems or on days when the photovoltaic
yield is low, the heat pump may not be able to provide suf-
ficient cooling. Switch to "Off" to additionally utilise power
drawn from the mains for cooling.
Recommendation: "On"
6.1.5 Other
During operation, EMTrend matches the set temperatures of the
heating system. This matching is based on the electrical power
measurement at the building's mains connection point and
photovoltaic generation and heat demand forecasts.
The greater the differentials between the heat storage temperat-
ures and the comfort/day temperatures, the more surplus
photovoltaic energy can be stored thermally. Self-consumption
of the photovoltaic energy generated is increased accordingly.
However, setting excessively high heat storage temperatures
results in inefficient heat pump operation and leads to unneces-
sary heat losses.
u Observe our recommendations when carrying out settings.
u Check whether you can lower the comfort/day temperature
without affecting your feeling of wellbeing. This allows you
to achieve a higher differential to the heat storage temper-
atures, enabling more surplus photovoltaic energy to be
stored.
During the heating season, EMTrend only carries out heat stor-
age in the heating buffer cylinder when heat demand is expec-
ted. In summer mode, only the DHW cylinder is used for heat
storage.
A very high selected heat storage temperature for DHW may not
be achievable at all times. In particular, high electrical power
consumption of the heat pump at low outside temperatures can
cause a protective mechanism of the heat pump control unit to
trip and heat storage to be cancelled.
Only in conjunction with WPMsystem.
u Activate the DHW learning function under "Settings"/
"DHW"/ DHW learning function". This ensures gentle opera-
tion of your heat pump and optimises the capacity forecast
of the DHW cylinder.
6.2 Room thermostats and room based remote
controls
External room thermostats
Downstream external room thermostats may limit the function-
ality of EM Trend. If external room thermostats limit the flow
rate in the radiators or underfloor heating system too much, this
may cause too little or no energy to be introduced into the
building.
u Set external room thermostats so that they do not close
completely.
Room based remote controls (FET)
If all heating circuits leading from the buffer cylinder are
equipped with mixing valves, only the temperature of the buffer
cylinder is controlled via heating circuit 1.
u Assign the room based remote controls to the heat distribu-
tion system (e.g.heating circuits2to5).
If you install room based remote controls, EMTrend learns, over
time, how much thermal energy can be stored in your home
and how well your building is insulated. Measurement of room
temperatures makes operation scheduling for the heat pump
significantly more accurate.
