2.3 Counter channel functions

Below, n is the counter channel (n = 1 or 2).

2.3.1 Controlling the counter and counting direction

The module counts the digital input pulses at the counter input (S1/S2).

In general, the CNTn_Hold and Set_CNTn_Dir control bits are available for controlling the

counting by means of the controller.

See Section “Output process data” on page 23.

You can also specify the following parameters:

– Counter control

– Counting direction

The following parameterizations are possible:

– Counting without a gate condition

– Control via the hardware gate

(CNTn_IN1 (Gn) bit in the input process data)

– Control via the process data via the software gate

(CNTn_SW_Gate bit in the output process data)

Counting without a

gate condition

The module counts every pulse at the counter input.

In this case, you can use the gate input as a normal digital input. The status is mapped to

input process data CNTn_IN1.

Hardware gate

(gate input)

You can use the CNTn_IN1 (Gn) gate input to control the counting of signals at source

input Sn by means of an external signal.

If you use the gate input, the module waits for a valid gate condition after a successful

parameterization. The counter is started after the gate condition is fulfilled.

Software gate You can use the CNTn_SW_Gate bit to control the counting of signals at source input Sn

via the output process data.

If you use the software gate, the module waits for a valid gate condition after a successful

parameterization. The counter is started after the gate condition is fulfilled.
