VMB301 Condition monitoring sensor with CANopen interface
12
8 CANopen interface
8.1 General information
The CANopen communication profile is based on the CAN Application Layer (CAL), a specification of
the CiA organisation. CANopen is considered a robust fieldbus offering highly flexible configuration
options.
It is used in many different applications, all of which are based on different application profiles.
CANopen includes a concept for configuring and communicating real-time data using synchronous
and asynchronous messages. Four types of messages (objects) are distinguished.
• Administration messages (layer management, network management and identifier distribution)
• Service Data Objects (SDO)
• Process Data Objects (PDO)
• Predefined objects (synchronisation, time stamp, emergency)

8.2 CANopen operating states
The CANopen standard CiA301 defines three possible operating states:
Pre-operational
No PDO messages (process data) are sent in the pre-operational state. The pre-operational state is
used to set the sensor parameters or as standby mode.
In the factory setting, the device logs on to the CAN bus with the BootUP message [0x700+Node ID]
when starting in pre-operational mode.
Operational
In the operational state all communication services are carried out. The operational state is used to
exchange the process data while in operation.
Stopped
In the stopped state only NMT messages (network management) are possible. This allows almost
complete separation of redundant or faulty sensors from the bus.
The master or network manager can request the sensor via NMT messages to change the state
accordingly.
8.3 Initial set-up
The device has a standardised CANopen interface in accordance with CiA DS-301. All measured
values and parameters can be accessed via the object directory (OD). The individual configuration can
be saved in the internal permanent memory.
The device is supplied with a node address (node ID) of 42 and a bit rate of 250 kbit/s.
u Configure the node address (node ID), the bit rate and the terminating resistor in the bus with
software before initial set-up of the device.
The device has an integrated 120 Ω terminating resistor for termination at the physical start and
at the physical end of the bus system.
This is deactivated by default and can be activated if required.
