6.4.3 Brute force password attack prevention algorithm
A brute force attack is a method of gaining access to password-protected device parameters, and involves trying every possible
password combination until a match is found. Specifi cally, the service and user passwords can be set in the range from 0 to 999,
and it is therefore possible to identify the set value with a fi nite number of attempts.
For this purpose, an algorithm has been introduced to prevent brute force attacks in the event where numerous attempts are
made to guess the password on the user interface.
The algorithm allows three incorrect password attempts; on the fourth attempt, it adds a 30 second delay before being able to
enter the password again. After this delay, the password can be entered.
If the correct password is entered, the parameters menu can be accessed, otherwise the delay is doubled, until reaching a max-
imum of 24 hours.
When the password entered is incorrect, the “Service icon is briefl y displayed and the buzzer sounds.
During the time when the algorithm prevents the password from being entered, the “Service icon fl ashes and a fl ashing count-
down indicates the time remaining until a new attempt to enter the password.
Notice: the brute force attack prevention algorithm is active only if the user password has been changed from the default
value.

6.4.4 Resetting the service password to the default value
When the device is powered on, pressing PROG resets the service password to the default value.
Once this operation has been completed, access is available via APPLICA mobile and desktop or the display, using the default
service password. This operation does not reset any other parameters to their factory default values.
To set the service password to the factory value (22):
power down the controller;
Power on the controller again and, when the software revision is shown on the display (example r1.4) press and hold PRG for
3 seconds
when “PSr is displayed, press PRG again within 3s
when 22 is displayed, the procedure has been completed and the password has been reset to the default value.

6.5 Upgrading the device software
When the software is upgraded, certain parameters may be reset to their default values. The following procedure describes how
to perform a fi rmware upgrade while maintaining the confi guration set on the device.
The software can be upgraded using the following tools:
Applica app on a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) via Bluetooth connection;
Applica desktop using a personal computer via RS485 connection.
To connect the device to the confi guration tools, see “Confi guration tools
