SAFETY
WARNING
READ AND UNDERSTAND
ALL INSTRUCTIONS. Failure to follow all instructions
listed below and on the machine may result in electric
shock, fire, and/or serious personal injury.
z Read the user manual carefully. Learn its applications
and limitations, as well as the specific potential hazards
related to this tool. Following this rule will reduce the risk
of electric shock, fire, or serious injury.
z Do not permit children to use this tool.
z Only use accessories that are recommended by the man-
ufacturer for the model described in this manual. Use only
as described in this manual.
z Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of body
away from openings and moving parts.
z Be sure the extension cord is in good condition. When
using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough
to carry the current that the product will use. A wire gauge
size (A.W.G.) of at least 14 is recommended for an extension
cord 50 feet or less in length. If in doubt, use the next heavi-
er gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the
cord. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage
resulting in loss of power and overheating.
z WARNING: Use outdoor extension cords marked SW-A,
SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOW-A.
These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk
of electric shock.
z This product is designed with a cord retainer that prevents
the extension cord from being pulled loose while using.
z If cord is damaged in any manner while plugged in, pull
extension cord from wall receptacle.
z Never carry the tool by the cord or yank it to disconnect
from a receptacle. Keep the cord from heat, oil, and sharp
edges.
z Keep hands away from moving parts.
z Avoid Unintentional Starting – Do not carry plugged in
appliances with a finger on the switch trigger. Be sure the
switch trigger is not engaged before plugging in.
z Do not use the tool if the switch trigger does not turn it on
or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch
trigger is dangerous and must be repaired.
z Do not operate this tool in the presence of flammable
liquids, gases, or dust.
z Keep bystanders, children, and visitors at least 100 ft. away
while operating this tool.
z If the appliance is not working as it should, has been
dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water,
call customer service.
z Do not use this product while tired, upset, or under the
influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of
inattention while operating this product may result in se-
rious personal injury.
z Use safety equipment. A dust mask, non-skid safety
shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for
appropriate conditions.
z Do not wear loose clothing, scarves, or jewelry. They can
be caught in moving parts.
z Inspect for misalignment or binding of moving parts,
breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect
operation. If damaged, call customer service.
z Keep this product and the handle dry, clean and free from oil
and grease. Always use a clean cloth when cleaning. Never
use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or
any strong solvents to clean this tool. Following this rule
will reduce the risk of loss of control and deterioration of
the enclosure plastic.
z Always wear safety glasses with side shields. Everyday
glasses have only impact resistant lenses. They are NOT
safety glasses. Following this rule will reduce the risk of
eye injury.
z Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to
comply with ANSI Z87.1 along with hearing protection when
operating this equipment.
z Protect hearing – Wear hearing protection during extended
periods of operation. Following this rule will reduce the risk
of serious personal injury.
z Do not expose this tool to rain. Water will increase the risk
of electric shock.
z Wear heavy long pants, long sleeves, boots, and gloves.
Avoid loose garments or jewelry that could get caught in
moving parts of the machine or its motor.
z Wear rubber boots when operating this tool. Protective
footwear will protect feet and improve footing on slippery
surfaces. Do not operate barefoot or while wearing sandals.
z Keep firm footing and balance. Do not overreach.
Overreaching can result in loss of balance.
z Do not operate this tool in a direction that will cause debris
or dust to be thrown towards people or pets.
z Store this tool indoors — When not in use, this tool should
be stored indoors in a dry, locked up place — unplugged
and out of the reach of children.
z When servicing this tool, use only identical replacement
parts. Replace or repair damaged cords. Follow all in-
structions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use
of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance
Instructions may create a risk of shock or injury.
z Never use this tool near fires, fireplaces, or hot ashes. Use
near fires or ashes can spread fires and result in serious
injury and/or property damage.
z Inspect the work area before each use. Remove all objects
such as rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, or string that can
be thrown or become entangled in the machine.
z Do not use this tool on ice. This can cause the operator to
slip and fall, resulting in possible serious personal injury.
z Never use this tool on frozen lakes, rivers, or similar sur-
faces. Serious injury or death could occur if the ice breaks.
