Drives (gearbox):
For lubrication of the gearbox remove the gearbox cover (s. g. 9):
1. Place the vehicle upside down onto a soft surface.
2. Remove the screws from the black gearbox cover.
3. Grasp the black gearbox cover and remove it vertically upwards.
4. Lubricate the worm with a small amount of highly viscous lubrication grease.
Wheel pickups:
The tamping machine draws current via all axles except for the slide unit. Apply a small amount of lubrication grease to
the inner side of the wheels where the wheel pickups are located.
Tamping unit spindle:
This part is accessible when the aggregate frame is in the “driving mode” position. Apply here a small amount of a very
low viscosity synthetic oil.
Attention! Carefully remove all excessive lubrication products everywhere.
6.2 Mechanical check and traction tyres
Check the free movement of tamping and slide units. All parts of the tamping mechanics (aggregate frame and tamping
unit) have to be able to freely move sideways. No lubrication is required here.
Change of traction tyres
At both motorized bogies, the vehicle is equipped with diagonally arranged traction tyres. As these wear o over time,
you should replace them at the rst signs of wear and tear.
You can mount and unmount the traction tyres through the slot between the wheel disc and the dummy chassis. These
dummies can be removed as well when the gearbox cover has been taken o (see g. 9).
When mounting the wheels, make sure you do it evenly and without twisting them in order to avoid out-of-round running
properties of the whole model.
Slide o the traction tyre sideways from the wheel. Possibly use a watchmaker’s screwdriver or a pair of pointed pliers.
Mount new traction tyre. Put on the traction tyre and carefully slide it on all around using a at blade
(e. g. a watchmaker’s screwdriver).
Oily traction tyres should also be exchanged and the wheel discs cleaned. Rubber tends to absorb lubrication products
and possibly loses its tension. As a result the traction tyres tend to slip on the wheel disc.
Note: Always exchange all traction tyres. Dierent degree of wear and tear between the bogies can aect the synchro-
nization of the two driving motors.
7. Prototype
Plasser & Theurer in Austria, the world market leader for track-laying machines, has introduced a novelty with the E3
concept. E3 stands for Economic, Ecologic and Ergonomic. The objective of this development is a more cost-eective
and environmentally friendly mode of operation than before, in which the working conditions of the operating personnel
of these machines have also been particularly included and optimised.
The machine operates electrically on all rotating parts and is supplied either by the overhead line or by a diesel generator
with 600 kW power.
The track tamping machine lifts the track, aligns it and tamps the ballast subgrade in one working cycle to correct the
track position. The track position thus achieved is subsequently perfected by the integrated dynamic track stabilisation.
This ensures a stable and low-maintenance track body even in the long term. And it does this for the normal track as
well as for the points.
Since both noise emission and exhaust emission have been minimised in electric operation, inner city work is also
possible, even at night.
The German Railways operate over 33,000 km of track, some of which is used by very dierent types of trac. Since
the route network is hardly growing, but eorts are being made to shift passenger and freight trac to the railways, track
maintenance is becoming more and more important. P & T’s track tamping machines make a signicant contribution to
this by helping to shorten line closure times. Accordingly, they are in use all over the world.
Technical data: Overall length: 34.14 x W 3.19 x H 4.22 m, weight 144 t. Maximum speed (self-propelled/trailed):
100 km/h. Engine power: 600 kW. Maximum working speed: 700 m/h.
8. Trouble-shooting
The train jerks in digital mode, particularly at low speeds.
- Check the output voltage of your command station. It should be at least 15 V.
- Lubricate the drive (refer to the relevant chapter on maintenance!)
