Glycerol
Three fatty acids
What Is Glycerin?
Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is an organic
compound with the chemical formula C₃H₈O₃.
Glycerin has three hydroxyl groups (OH) which
make it a polar molecule. This is why glycerin is
soluble in water.
Glycerin forms the backbone
of fat molecules or
triglycerides. Fat molecules
are the main component of
the oils that you are using.
They are also the main
component of the fat in
animals, including humans!
A triglyceride has one glycerol
molecule which connects to three
fatty acid molecules. A fatty acid
molecule is a long chain of carbons
(with hydrogens attached) with a
carboxylic acid group (–COOH).
