Old units contain combustible refrigerants
See national regulations.
Labelling of equipment using labels
See local regulations
Electrical components that can produce electric
arcs or sparks and that are not considered as igni-
tion sources in accordance with 22.1
16.1 letters b),
c), d) or f) may only be replaced by parts specified
by the unit manufacturer. Replacing these with
other parts can lead to ignition of the refrigerant in
the event of a leak
Information on maintenance
Checking surroundings
Before beginning work on systems containing flam-
mable refrigerants, safety checks must be carried
out to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimised.
When making repairs to the refrigerant system, the
following safety precautions must be observed and
adhered to before work is carried out on the
system.
Procedure
Work should be carried out using a controlled
process to minimise the risk of flammable gases or
vapours being present while the work is being car-
ried out.
General workspace
All maintenance personnel and other persons in
the vicinity should be informed of the type of task
to be carried out. Avoid working in confined
spaces. The area around the workspace should be
cordoned off. Ensure that conditions in the area
are safe by checking for flammable material.
Checking for the presence of refrigerants
The area should be checked with a suitable refrig-
erant detector before and during the work to
ensure that the technician is aware of any possible
flammable atmospheres. Ensure that the refrig-
erant detector used is suitable for working with
flammable refrigerants, e.g. it must not produce
sparks, must be sufficiently sealed and must be
intrinsically safe.
Presence of a fire extinguisher
When soldering work is carried out on the refriger-
ation system or associated parts, suitable fire
extinguishing equipment must be readily available.
Ensure that a dry powder or CO
2
fire extinguisher
is located in the vicinity.
No ignition sources
Any person who works on a refrigerant system and
who is exposed to pipes that contain or have con-
tained flammable refrigerants must use ignition
sources in such a way that they cannot cause a
fire or explosion. All potential ignition sources,
including cigarette smoking, must be kept a suffi-
cient distance from installation, repair, transport,
drainage and disposal operations where flammable
refrigerants may be released into the environment.
Before starting work, the area around the unit must
be examined to ensure that there are no flam-
mable or ignition hazards. Attach signs prohibiting
smoking.
Ventilated area
Ensure that the area is outdoors or sufficiently ven-
tilated before reaching into the system or per-
forming soldering work. Adequate ventilation must
be ensured for the entire duration of the work to be
carried out. The ventilation system must ensure
that any released refrigerant is safely distributed
and preferably diverted into the open air.
Inspection of the refrigerant equipment
When replacing electrical components, they must
be suitable for the purpose and meet the correct
specifications. The manufacturer's maintenance
and repair instructions must be observed and fol-
lowed at all times. If in doubt, consult the manufac-
turer's technical service.
The following tests are to be applied to systems
that contain combustible refrigerants:
n The filling amount must correspond to the size
of the room in which the parts containing refrig-
erant are installed
n The ventilation devices and outlets are working
properly and are not blocked.
n When an indirect refrigerant circuit is used, the
presence of refrigerant in the secondary circuit
must be checked.
n The labelling of the units is visible and legible.
Illegible labelling must be corrected.
n Refrigerant piping or components must be
installed in such a way that they are not
exposed to any substance that can attack
refrigerant-containing components, unless the
components are made of materials that are
naturally corrosion-resistant or adequately pro-
tected against corrosion.
