Recycling
When refrigerant is removed from a system,
whether for servicing or shutdown, it is recom-
mended that all refrigerant be removed safely
.
When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, ensure
that only suitable refrigerant recovery cylinders are
used. Ensure that the correct number of cylinders
is available to hold the total amount of refrigerant.
All cylinders used must be suitable and labelled for
the recycled refrigerant (i.e. special cylinders for
refrigerant recycling). The cylinders must be
equipped with a pressure relief valve and a shut-off
valve connected to it, and they must be in good
working order. Empty recycling cylinders must be
emptied and, if possible, cooled before recycling.
The recycling system must be in good working
order with appropriate instructions for the equip-
ment and suitable for recycling flammable refriger-
ants. In addition, a set of calibrated scales in good
working order should be available. The hoses must
be complete and have leak-free and flawless dis-
connect couplings. Before using the recycling
equipment, it is important to check that it is in good
working order, has been properly maintained and
that all associated electrical components are
sealed to prevent ignition of the refrigerant in the
event of a leak. If in doubt, contact the manufac-
turer.
The recycled refrigerant must be returned to the
refrigerant supplier in the correct recycling cylinder
and the corresponding disposal certificate must be
organised. The refrigerant must not be mixed in
the processing plants and especially not in the cyl-
inders. When removing a compressor or com-
pressor oils, make sure that they have been evac-
uated to an acceptable level to ensure that no
flammable refrigerant remains in the lubricant.
The evacuation process should be carried out
before the compressor is returned to the supplier.
To speed up this process, only the compressor
housing may be heated electrically. When oil is
drained from a system, it must be done in a safe
manner.
