5.5 SFP
The FL SWITCH EP7… supports fiber optic ports that can connect to other devices using
SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) modules. SFP-based fiber optic ports with multimode
(MM) or single mode (SM are available as well as a RJ45 twisted pair SFP. Be sure to se-
lect the SFP that is compatible with the data rate of the SFP slot.
For fiber connections always connect the TX fiber connection of switch A to the RX fiber
connection of switch B.
The SFP modules must be purchased separately.
5.5.1 General fiber optic cable handling instructions
WARNING:
Never look into fiber optic cables. Laser radiation might be emitted from discon-
nected fibers or connectors.
Wear finger cots or gloves. Your hands may look clean, but dirt and oils on them can dam-
age the fiber and contaminate connectors.
Never use the fiber pigtail to pick up or support the weight of the device. Keep both the
device and the optical connector together in your hand(s).
The fiber is made of a very pure expensive glass. Treat it with the same care that would
be used when handling expensive crystal glass.
Do not allow kinks or knots to develop in the fiber. Do not pull on the fiber when kinks or
knots are present. Pulling will only cause knots, kinks, and curls to tighten and exceed the
minimum bend radius.
Always use the correct tools for stripping and cleaving the fiber. It will save time and re-
duce breakage caused by scratches.
Follow all ESD precautions.
5.5.2 SFP application considerations
SFP modules are designed to common interface and mechanical international standards.
The standards specify a minimum range of performance. This minimum range may not be
adequate for the most demanding redundancy failover times or nano second level time
critical applications such as PTP. The SFP’s recommended in the accessories section,
have been screened to offer optimal performance. While the use of other SFPs may be
compatible electrically, the performance may not meet the ns responsiveness require-
ments of PTP, especially the IEEE power profile.
10 Gigabit SFP compatibility
The 10 Gigabit industrial SFP technology is relatively new. Variances in technology im-
pact compatibility with the switch. The Phoenix Contact 10 Gig SFPs, recommended in
the accessories section, use the SGMII 10 Gigabit SFP technology required for compati-
bility with the FL SWITCH EP7… switch.
