1.4 Achievable safety depending on the modules used

The SISTEMA software utility for the safety of control systems on machines can be

downloaded free of charge from the website for the Institute for Occupational Safety and

Health of the German Social Accident Insurance.

This Windows tool provides assistance in evaluating the safety of control systems within the

scope of EN ISO 13849-1.

1.5 Safety when starting applications

Safety notes for starting applications

Take the following into consideration when determining the start conditions for your

machine or system:

– The machine or system may only be started if it has been ensured that no one is present

in the danger zone.

– Meet the requirements of EN ISO 13849-1 with regard to the manual reset function.

This applies to:

– Switching on safe devices

– Acknowledging device error messages

– Acknowledging communication errors

Also observe these notes to prevent unexpected machine startup following

acknowledgment by means of an operator acknowledgment.

WARNING: Observe the safety integrity level of the entire machine/system,

otherwise there is a risk of death or injury and loss of functional safety

The safe PROFINET gateway can be used to couple safety-related signals up to

SIL 3/SIL CL 3/PL e/Cat. 4. However, this does not change the safety integrity level of the

transmitted signal itself.

If a signal is transmitted from PROFINET system 1, whose safety integrity level only

corresponds to SIL 2 due to the input circuit of the safe input module, only one output

signal maximum that also corresponds to SIL 2 may occur at the actuator of PROFINET

system 2.

Always consider the entire signal string when determining the safety integrity level.

Also observe these notes to prevent unexpected machine startup following

acknowledgment by means of an operator acknowledgment.

WARNING: Unintentional machine startup

As two PROFINET systems are coupled to the safe PROFINET gateway,

acknowledgment in one PROFINET system can lead to unintentional machine startup in

the other PROFINET system.

Therefore, system-wide measures for preventing unintentional machine startup must be

planned and implemented in both PROFINET systems.
