SHAPING THE SOUND
There are several ways to fine-tune the sound and behaviour of a
loaded sample instrument, in order to make it more or less dynamic
and responsive and to shape its contour. Each sample instrument
comes with preset values for some of the parameters below, which are
automatically loaded when a sample instrument is selected. All controls
can also be adjusted manually.
DYNAMICS
The DYNAMICS control determines the velocity response for the
selected sample instrument.
With each Dynamics setting; 1, 2 and 3, the sample instrument has
an increased dynamic range. When Dynamics is turned off, all velocity
controlled parameters, including preset filter settings are deactivated.
SAMPLE INFO
Pressing SAMPLE INFO (Shift+Dynamics) shows additional information
about the selected sample, such as its full name and size, in the display.
ATTACK, DECAY/SUSTAIN AND RELEASE
These controls allow for setting the contour, or envelope, of the Sample
Synth sound:
ATTACK controls the time it takes for the sample to reach its full level.
The DECAY/SUSTAIN knob determines how quickly the sound fades
with the key still being pressed down. At the maximum position the
envelope is in Sustain mode, meaning that a sample instrument will
sound as long as the key is being pressed.
The RELEASE knob controls how long time it takes for the sound to fade
out after the key has been released.
MONO/LEGATO
With the MONO or LEGATO voice mode active, only one note is played at
a time, just like on a traditional monophonic synthesizer. In Mono mode
the sound is retriggered with each stroke whereas it is only retriggered
with detached (“non-legato”) strokes in Legato mode.
When none of the Mono and Legato LEDs are lit, the Sample Synth
section is in its default polyphonic mode.
GLIDE
The GLIDE function makes the pitch “glide” from one note to the next
when playing (traditionally referred to as portamento) and is available in
Legato and Mono voice mode only. The 1, 2 and 3 (both LEDs being lit)
settings provide three different Glide times to choose from.
UNISON
The UNISON feature creates an ensemble-like sound by combining
multiple, slightly detuned and stereo panned, voices borrowed from
neighbouring notes.
There are three different degrees of Unison, 1, 2 and 3, each providing
an increasing degree of detune and stereo spread.
VIBRATO
When set to ON the Vibrato is instantly applied to the selected Sample
Synth sound when a note is played.
In DLY (delay) mode the Vibrato is introduced some time after a note is
played. The Vibrato delay time can be set to an appropriate value in the
RATE/AMT menu, see below.
When set to PEDAL the Vibrato is activated by using an attached pedal.
This could be the left or middle pedal of a Nord Triple Pedal or a pedal
attached to the Foot Switch jack. Settings related to this feature can be
found in the PEDAL menu (Shift + Program 5), see page 30 for details.
VIBRATO RATE/AMT
The Rate, Amount and Delay time for the Vibrato are set in the RATE/
AMT menu (Shift + Vibrato). Each of these parameters is accessed by
pressing its corresponding soft button.
Rate can be set to values between 2 and 8 Hz and Amount between 0
and 10. The Delay time can be set to values between 0.1-3.0 seconds.
i When a sample instrument is loaded, settings for Vibrato Rate and
Amount are loaded as part of its sample instrument preset.
VIBRATO BUTTON
The VIBRATO button at the far left of the panel can be
used for applying Vibrato in real time, using the Rate and
Amount settings made in the Sample Synth section.
The ENABLE (Shift+Vibrato) parameter can be used for
turning on or off this function on a per-Layer basis, making it possible
to apply Vibrato using the button to one Layer but not the other, for
instance in a split set-up.
