v-RMS is measured according to the DIN ISO 20816-3 standard (measurement and evaluation
of machine vibration).
6.6.2 a-RMS – friction
a-RMS (effective value of the acceleration) detects mechanical friction of machine components.
This friction typically occurs due to wear (defective bearings, worn toothed wheels, etc.) or lubrication
problems (impurities in grease, water in oil, etc.).
With the Basic condition monitoring version, free parameter setting of the measurement axes is
possible; with the DataScience condition monitoring version, all three measurement axes and
the magnitude are output separately.
6.6.3 a-Peak – impact
a-Peak monitors the maximum acceleration value.
This can be an indicator of “impacts”. Impacts can occur once or periodically (e.g. in the event of
damage to rolling element bearings).
With the Basic condition monitoring version, free parameter setting of the measurement axes is
possible; with the DataScience condition monitoring version, all three measurement axes and
the magnitude are output separately.
6.6.4 Crest factor
The crest factor is a described characteristic value of the signal analysis. It is defined as the ratio of
the maximum value to the effective value (peak/RMS).
In condition monitoring, the characteristic value is used for the evaluation of the bearing condition. The
high-frequency acceleration signals with a short pulse duration of a bearing damage generate higher
peak values in relation to the effective value. This ratio can be read in the crest factor and can serve
as an early warning system for incipient bearing damage.
Free parameter setting of the measurement axes is only available for devices of the Basic
condition monitoring type.
The crest factor decreases with advanced bearing damage and should always be used in
combination with another characteristic value.
6.6.5 Surface temperature
An increased surface temperature occurs with rotating parts due to friction. This characteristic value
can also be an indication of electrical problems in the drive unit. A temperature rise is the measure of
energy loss and increased wear.
6.7 Event counter, event history and operating hours counter
For VV devices
an event history can be used to call up a list of the last 20 events that occurred. These are stored in
an internal ring buffer and can be exported as a CSV file via the IO-Link BLOB function (index 49 /
-5001).
an event counter can be used to count different events. The event counter is incremented by 1 if
the corresponding event occurs.
an operating hours counter is used to count the devices’s operating hours since delivery. The
internal memory is persistent and cannot be reset.
