Example: read the manufacturer ID via AoE
Task: read the manufacturer ID of the device in TwinCAT via AoE
Solution: In TwinCAT via the [AoE – Online] view in [Identity Object] (index: 0x1018), read the value
for [Vendor ID] (subindex: 0x0001)
Requirements:
ü The connection to the device is established (online).
u In the [Solution Explorer]: Double-click on the device node.
w A detailed view of the device appears.
u Select the [AoE – Online] tab.
w The input mask for acyclic communication via AoE is displayed.
u Enter the following parameter values:
• [Port]: 0x0000FFFF
• [Index Group]: 0x00003F02
• [Index Offset]: 0x10180001
u Click on [Read].
w The Read-Data field displays the read value: 0x00000622 (= ifm electronic)
9.2.16 Updating the firmware
The firmware of the device can be updated using the protocol File over EtherCAT (FoE).
The firmware update can only be executed in the following EtherCAT operating modes:
BOOTSTRAP (recommended), PRE-OPERATIONAL, SAFE-OPERATIONAL.
Example: TwinCAT
Requirements:
ü The connection to the device is established (online).
ü The device is in one of the following EtherCAT operating modes: BOOTSTRAP, PRE-
OPERATIONAL or SAFE-OPERATIONAL.
ü The new firmware has been downloaded and unpacked.
u Rename the new firmware file to container.bin .
u In the [Solution Explorer]: Double-click on the device node.
w A detailed view of the device appears.
u Select the [Online] tab.
u In the [File Access over EtherCAT] area: Click on [Download].
w A dialogue window appears.
u Select the new firmware file and click [OK] to confirm your selection.
w A dialogue window appears.
