When entering the refrigeration circuit to carry out repairs - or for
any other reason - conventional procedures should be used.
However, for flammable refrigerants, it is important to follow
best practice as flammability is a factor to be considered. The
following procedure should be followed:
• remove the refrigerant ;
• purge the circuit with inert gas ;
• evacuate ;
• purge with inert gas ;
• open the circuit by cutting or soldering.
The refrigerant charge must be recovered in the appropriate recovery bottles. For appliances
containing flammable refrigerants, the system must be purged with oxygen-free nitrogen to make
the appliance safe for flammable refrigerants. This process may be repeated several times.
Compressed air or oxygen must not be used to purge refrigeration systems.
For appliances containing flammable refrigerants, the
refrigerants should be purged by breaking the vacuum in the
system with oxygen-free nitrogen and continuing to fill until the
working pressure is reached, then venting to atmosphere and finally
pulling down to vacuum. This process should be repeated until there
is no refrigerant left in the system. When the last charge of oxygen-
free nitrogen is used, the system must be purged to atmospheric
pressure to allow work to proceed. This operation is absolutely vital
if brazing operations are to be carried out on the pipework.
Ensure that the vacuum pump outlet is not close to a potential source of ignition and that
ventilation is available.
Charging procedures
In addition to conventional charging procedures, the following requirements
must be met.
•
Ensure that there is no contamination of the various refrigerants when using the charging
equipment. Hoses or pipes should be as short as possible to minimise the amount of refrigerant
they contain.
•
Cylinders must be held in the correct position in accordance with the instructions.
•
Make sure the refrigeration system is earthed before charging the system with refrigerant.
•
Label the system when charging is complete (if not already done).
•
Be very careful not to overfill the refrigeration system.
Before recharging, the system must be pressure tested with the
appropriate purge gas. The system should be leak tested at the end
of charging but before commissioning. A follow-up leak test should
be carried out before leaving the site
