Checking for the presence of refrigerant
The area should be checked with an appropriate refrigerant detector
before and during work, to ensure that the technician is aware of the
existence of potentially toxic or flammable atmospheres. Ensure that
the leak detection equipment used is suitable for all applicable
refrigerants, i.e. non-sparking, properly sealed or intrinsically safe.
Presence of a fire extinguisher
If hot work is to be carried out on refrigeration equipment or any
associated parts, suitable fire extinguishing equipment must be
readily available. A powder or
CO2
extinguisher should be located close
to the work area.
No ignition sources
No person carrying out work in connection with a refrigeration
system which involves exposing piping must use ignition sources in
such a way as to cause a fire or explosion hazard. All possible sources
of ignition, including cigarettes, must be sufficiently distant from the
site of installation, repair, removal and disposal, during which
refrigerant may possibly be released into the surrounding space.
Before work begins, the area around the equipment must be
examined to ensure that there is no risk of flammability or ignition.
No smoking" signs must be posted.
Ventilated area
Ensure that the area is open to the air or properly ventilated before
entering the system or carrying out hot work. Some ventilation must
be maintained throughout the work. Ventilation must allow any
refrigerant released to be dispersed safely and, preferably, expelled
into the atmosphere.
Checks on refrigeration equipment
When electrical components are replaced, they must be suitable for
their intended use and meet the correct specifications. The
manufacturer's care and maintenance instructions must be followed
at all times. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer's technical service
for assistance.
