Interference and Channel Selection
Wi-Fi and E-FLY radios operate in the 2.4GHz band. Many other devices including Wi-Fi
routers, Bluetooth devices and wireless audio also use this band so the 4Cast DMX Bridge
will always be competing for air space no matter where it is located. The 2.4GHz band is
divided into 16 channels. Wi-Fi in the U.S. and Canada uses channels 1-11 and in Europe
channels 12 and 13 are also available. For the best connection between a Wi-Fi wireless
device such as a tablet, phone, or laptop and the 4Cast DMX Bridge when in AP mode, it’s
important to select the best available channel. (Note when using an external network when
the 4Cast DMX Bridge is running in station mode, it will join on the channel that’s already
established by that network.) There are applications available which can use the radio on a
wireless device to scan for the least used channel in an area. It is highly recommended to
use such an application before running the 4Cast DMX Bridge in AP Mode at a new location,
or when the local Wi-Fi environment changes. Remember most 4Cast DMX Bridge settings
will not take effect until after a system reset.
It is strongly suggested to keep the 4Cast DMX Bridge positioned within 50 feet and with a
clear direct line of sight from the Wi-Fi device when running in AP mode. When using an
external network, distance and signal strength will vary depending on the location of the
network’s router. The human body will block the W-Fi signal, so it is best to position the
4Cast DMX Bridge high above people. It is also strongly suggested to turn Bluetooth off on
any nearby devices such as cell phones, smart watches, and other Bluetooth wireless
devices. The range of the E-FLY radio is much greater, so E-Fly equipped lighting fixtures
can be controlled much farther away.
If E-FLY is not used, turn it off in the 4Cast DMX Bridge settings. If in use, set the E-FLY
channel at least several steps away from the 4Cast DMX Bridge Wi-Fi channel. The best
channel to use for E-Fly is 14 (highest channel) as this is out of range of Wi-Fi in the U.S.
and Europe. E-Fly counts channels from 0-14 so E-FLY channel 14 is the equivalent to Wi-
Fi channel 15.
