Appendix A - Wireless Basics
A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a cellular computer network that transmits and receives data with radio signals instead of
wires. Wireless LANs are used increasingly in both home and oce environments, and public areas such as airports, coee shops
and universities. Innovative ways to utilize WLAN technology are helping people to work and communicate more eciently.
Increased mobility and the absence of cabling and other xed infrastructure have proven to be benecial for many users.
Technical Advancements of Wi-Fi 5
Wireless or Wi-Fi technology is another way of connecting your computer to the network without using wires. Wi-Fi uses radio
frequency to connect wirelessly, so you have the freedom to connect computers anywhere in your home or oce network.
Over these years, Wi-Fi, a collection of wireless networking protocols based on IEEE 802.11 standard, has improved continually.
The adapter supports Wi-Fi 5 and features the following improvements over the previous wireless generations:
-Downlink MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output): Allows multiple devices to receive data simultaneously
with multiple data streams.
- Wider Channels: 80 or 160 MHz (double or quadruple the 40 MHz in Wi-Fi 4).
- Higher throughput than Wi-Fi 4 with additional streams (8 streams that double the number of Wi-Fi 4)
These technical innovations allow for higher speeds, much less latency, more ecient communication with multiple devices
simultaneously. Even though the AC13U is Wi-Fi 5 compliant, it is also backward compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n, allowing
legacy devices to use 2.4 GHz frequency. your network. The wider channel improvement is a giant leap of speed from megabits
to gigabits per second.
Wireless users can use the same applications they use on a wired network. Wireless adapter cards used on laptop and desktop
systems support the same protocols as Ethernet adapter cards. For devices that would like to bridge wired and wireless
connections, a wireless adapter card such as the AX18U can be easily installed on the devices to provide such link or to augment
their existing wireless capability.
