RD-78 Controls

Step 2: Controls
TOP PANEL
1. SYNC IN – use this 3.5 mm TRS jack socket to synchronize the
RD-78 to an external analog clock.
2. SYNC OUT – use this 3.5 mm TRS jack socket to synchronize
external analog devices to the RD-78’s clock.
3. PHONES – use this 3.5 mm TRS jack socket to monitor the
RD-78’s output with a suitable pair of stereo headphones.
4- 13. LEVEL CONTROLS – use these controls to set the levels of
the RD-78’s voices:
4. Bass Drum
5. Snare Drum
6. Clap & Rimshot
7. Cymbal & Hi hat
8. Metallic Beat
9. Maracas
10. Tambourine
11. Guiro
12. Clave & Cowbell
13. Conga & Bongos
14. ACCENT – use this control to adjust the level of the accents
(where programmed).
15. BALANCE – use this control to set a balance on the main
output between the lower pitched sounds and the higher.
Turning the control CCW emphasizes lower sounds,
CW emphasizes higher ones.
16. TEMPO – use this control to set the tempo of the RD-78’s
internal clock. Range is 40 bpm to 300 bpm.
17. VARIATION – use this switch to set the frequency of
variations (see also control 21). Range is 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 bars.
18. TRACK/INSTRUMENT – use this switch to select the track
to be played or recorded, or to select the instrument to be
programmed in Pattern Record mode.
19. INSTRUMENT SELECT – use these four switches to select
alternative instruments for programming:
• Clave or Tambourine
• High Bongo or Guiro
• Low Bongo or Metallic Beat
• Low Conga or Cowbell
20. TRACK/PATTERN – use this switch to select what mode the
RD-78 is in:
• Rhythm: playing one of the sixteen preset patterns.
• Track Write: creating a track from programmed patterns.
• Track Play: playing back a track that has already
been created.
• Pattern Play: playing back a pattern that has already
been created.
• Pattern Write: programming a pattern using the
available instruments.
21. VARIATION – use this switch to select the type of variation
to be used:
• O (no variation).
• Rhythm – plays rhythm B if A is running, and vice versa.
• Break – plays a silent bar.
• Fill-In 1 – 7 (seven pre-programmed lls).
• Rolling High Bongo.
• Rolling Snare Drum.
22. FADE IN – use this switch to select a fade-in time at the start
of a track: o, short (8 steps) or long (48 steps).
23. FADE OUT – use this switch to select a fade-out time at the
end of a track: o, short (8 steps) or long (32 steps).
24. VOLUME – use this control to set the master output level of
the RD-78, for the phones output (3) and mix output (58).
25. CLEAR/MANUAL/RESET/DC – this button has multiple
functions, depending on which mode the RD-78 is in:
• In pattern write use this switch to clear a pattern of all
programmed steps.
• In preset or pattern play mode use this button to manually
insert a variation (according to the setting of switch 28).
• When this button and Start/Stop (button 29) are pressed
together in pattern write mode a random pattern will
be created.
• In track write mode this button sets the bar to the rst
position, and is used to mark the nal bar (Da Capo)
26. SCALE – use this switch to select the scale that a pattern will
be programmed or played in:
• ⁄ time.
• ⁄ time.
• ¾ time
• ⁄ time
27. PATTERN/GROUP – use this button to switch between A
and B variants of a preset or programmed rhythm. The LEDs
indicate which is in use.
Press and hold Pattern/Group and Write/Next (button 47) to
select the synchronization source using buttons 31 – 38.
28. VARIATION – use this switch to select whether pattern
variations will be inserted automatically according to the
setting of switches 17 and 21; or will be inserted manually by
pressing button 25.
29. START/STOP – use this button to start and stop playback of
the RD-78 when using the internal clock.
30. FUNCTION/CANCEL – use this button to access alternative
functions on some buttons; and to mute selected instruments
when playing the preset patterns, in conjunction with
buttons 31 – 46. The LED above the button lights when the
button is in use.
Buttons 31 – 46 have dierent functions according to which
mode the RD-78 is in:
PATTERN PLAY
Use the buttons to select a pattern from 1 – 16.
MUTE
While the RD-78 is playing individual voices can be muted by
pressing and holding the FUNCTION button (30) and pressing the
relevant button 31 – 46 to mute the associated voice. Repeating
the action will undo the muting.
PATTERN WRITE
Use the buttons to insert an instrument on a desired step from
1 – 16 (dependent on the number of steps in the pattern).
To select the last step of the pattern hold FUNCTION button 30 and
press the button for the last required step.
