with the last required step. Both scale and last step can be
adjusted at any time.
Select an instrument using switch 18. You can program steps
either by pressing whichever buttons 31 – 46 you want that
instrument to sound on, or by pressing the TAP button (47) on
the required steps. The LED above the step(s) will light when the
selected instrument has been programmed onto that step.
To remove an instrument simply press the relevant step button
again and the instrument will no longer sound on that step
(LED is unlit). To clear all steps for an instrument hold the CLEAR
button (25). There is no Write procedure, when you are happy with
your pattern press START/STOP (29) and select another pattern.
If you want to write a pattern that is a variation on one that is
already written select the required pattern, hold the FUNCTION
button (30) and press button 43 (COPY). Then select the second
pattern, hold FUNCTION and press button 44 (PASTE) to copy to
the new location. You can then make whatever changes that you
wish to the variant pattern.
PLAYING PATTERNS
Move switch 20 to Pattern Play to play patterns that you have
programmed yourself, or Rhythm to play the preset patterns.
Press PATTERN (button 27) to select group I or II (programmed)
or A/B (preset). Press whichever button 31-46 for the rst
pattern required. Press START/STOP (29) and adjust the tempo if
necessary with control 16 (if using the internal clock). Pressing
another button in the sequence 31 – 46 will change pattern once
the current pattern is reaches its last step.
Patterns can also be chained in blocks of up to four patterns, but
only in the groups 31-34, 35-38, 39-42 and 43-46. It is not possible
to chain across groups.
WRITING A TRACK
Once you have programmed all of the patterns that you need
you can then combine them into a track. Move switch 20 to Track
Write and use the TRACK switch (18) to select the track that you
want to write to. Press and hold the CLEAR/RESET button (25) to
set the playhead to the rst bar. Select the pattern group I or II
with button 27 & 30, then press START/STOP (29). The existing
rst bar will start playing. Select a new rst bar pattern using
buttons 31-46 then press WRITE/NEXT (47). The selected pattern
will be written to bar one, and the playhead will move to bar two.
Repeat these steps until you are ready to program the nal bar of
the track. In this instance select the pattern then press the CLEAR/
RESET button before pressing WRITE. This marks the current bar as
being the nal one.
There is another, memory saving function, which can be used if a
section of a track is repeated. Rather than programming the same
group of patterns several times press the PATTERN button (27) on
the rst bar to be repeated (DS) and carry on programming.
When the track is being played back (see below) pressing the TAP
button (47) will cause the playhead to return to this bar once the
current one is complete.
EDITING A TRACK
To make simple edits to a track, such as replacing a pattern in
a location, set switch 20 to Track Write, press and hold
CLEAR/RESET (25) to set the playhead to the rst bar, then press
START/STOP (29). You can use the WRITE/NEXT button (27) to
move through the track until you get to the point where you want
to change the pattern. At this point use buttons 31-46 to select the
new pattern required then press WRITE/NEXT to write it and move
on. You do not need to continue to the end of the track if there are
no further changes to make.
You can also jump to a specic bar in the track by pressing and
releasing the FUNCTION button (30) then pressing it again and
using buttons 31 – 42 to select the bar number. Use the highest
button rst: for example to select bar 212 press 42, followed by 31,
followed by 32.
To delete bar(s) from a track jump to the required bar as described
above, hold the FUNCTION button and press button 45 (DELETE).
The selected bar is deleted, but subsequent bars are unaected.
To insert bar(s) to a track jump to the required bar, hold the
FUNCTION button and press button 46 (INSERT). Press START/
STOP (29) and select the required pattern. Press WRITE/NEXT (27)
to conrm.
PLAYING A TRACK

track to be played using the TRACK switch (18). Press RESET (25) to
move the playhead to the rst bar. Press START/STOP (29) to start
the track playing. At any point during playback pressing TAP (47)
will jump the playhead back to the DS bar selected as
described above. When the track reaches the DC bar it will loop
back to the rst bar. If this is not desired program an empty bar as
the last one and press START/STOP to halt playback in this bar.

Step 3: Getting started
OVERVIEW
This ‘getting started’ guide will help you set up your RD-78 and
briey introduce its capabilities.
CONNECTION
To connect the RD-78 to your system, please consult the
connection guide earlier in this document.
SOFTWARE SETUP
The RD-78 is a USB Class Compliant MIDI device, and so no driver
installation is required. The RD-78 does not require any additional
drivers to work with Windows and MacOS.
HARDWARE SETUP
Make all the connections in your system. Keep the RD-78 power
turned o when making any connections.
WARM UP TIME
We recommend leaving 15 minutes or more time for the RD-78 to
warm up before recording or live performance. (Longer if it has
been brought in from the cold.) This will allow the precision
analog circuits time to reach their normal operating temperature
and tuned performance.
FIRMWARE UPDATE
Please check the behringer.com website regularly forany
updates to theBehringer SYNTHTRIBE app. Theapp looks for the
latestrmware lewhich can thenbe downloaded and used to
update the RD-78.
