Introduction
There are a few different methods that can be used to configure Camera Link
cameras.
1 Simple ASCII commands
2 Proprietary protocol - Camera manufacturer specific serial communications
protocol
3 CL Protocol DLL - A GenICam wrapper for proprietary protocols
4 GenCP - A GenICam standard for camera communications
You will need to determine what type of protocol your camera uses in order
to know which method should be used. These methods are described below.
Simple ASCII Commands
Many cameras accepts simple, human-readable ASCII commands. These
are usually described in the camera’s manual. These commands can be sent
and received using a Hyperterminal like application that is designed for CL
cameras. BitFlow ships an application call BFCom, which can be used with
this type of camera.
Proprietary protocol
Some camera manufactures design their own protocols for controlling their
cameras. These protocols are usually not human readable and require a spe-
cific camera control application from the camera manufacturer. While these
protocols are proprietary, they are usually described in the camera’s manual
so that users can write their won camera control applications.
CL Protocol DLL
The GenICam committee has designed a system that allows cameras with
proprietary protocol to be used with GenICam tools. This system requires the
camera make to build a translation DLL that uses standard APIs to convert GenI-
Cam commands to camera specific commands (and back). Once the camera
firm makes this DLL, it can be used to plug into the GenICam ecosystem for
camera control. Camera that have a CL Protocol DLL can be used with BitFlow’s
Ximilon camera control application.
GenCP
GenCP is a GenICam communications protocol. Many different types of cam-
eras can use GenCP. If a camera is GenCP compliant, then it can be used with
any GenICam camera control application. BitFlow Ximilon camera control
application can be use to control GenCP compliant camera.
