At least ONCE PER MONTH, closely inspect the following ramp components:
1. Rubber bumpers: Check the bumpers for dry rot, severe wear, and other damage. Make sure that the
bumpers are solidly fastened to the ramp frame.
2. Chains and hooks: Examine the chain links for damage. Make sure that the hooks operate properly and are
not bent, warped, etc.
3. Tow bar assembly (see “Moving the Ramp” on p. 5): Inspect the key, wing nut, spring, fork pocket, and safety
chain for cracks, severe wear, and rusting. Confirm that the spring compresses and recoils normally.
4. Landing gear: DO NOT crawl under the
ramp. Closely inspect the wheels. Make
sure that both tires are adequately inflated.
The recommended inflation pressures for
warm and cold temperatures are provided
on the sidewalls of the tires. Adjust tire
pressures as indicated. Examine the landing
gear. Make sure that welds are intact. The
frame should be square and rigid—no
twisting, warping, or bending. Pay particular
attention to the cylinder mounting brackets
(solid, blue circle; part no. 18-516-004), the
(landing gear) swing arm brackets (red,
dashed circle; 18-516-008), the pin brackets
of the axel tube (solid, green rectangle),
and associated pins for rust and corrosion.
Inspect the clevis pins (part no. 33-112-023)
for severe wear, warps, cracks, rust, or
corrosion. Make sure that cotter pins (part
no. 65080) are in place and in satisfactory
condition. Lubricate wheel hubs with
waterproof automotive grease. Lubricate
clevis pins with SAE30 oil.
5. Hydraulic system: Inspect the pump, tank, hoses, cylinder, and fittings for leaks. Examine the hoses for bulges,
kinks, cuts, and other damage. Move the handle back-and-forth. Close the release valve (see p. 3). Move the
handle back-and-forth. Confirm that the cylinders extend at the same rate. The ramp should be the same height
from side to side. Open the release valve and lower the ramp.
6. Ramp: Inspect the frame and surfaces for cracks, severe wear, rusting, and corrosion. Also look for
compromised welds, metal fatigue, impact damage, and other forms of damage.
C. Yearly inspection: In addition to the inspections described above in parts A and B, check the hydraulic fluid at
least once per year. When the ramp is fully lowered, the oil should be 1-1
1
/
2
inch below the fill port/plug. Add
anti-wear hydraulic oil of viscosity grade 150 SUS at 100°F, (ISO 32 at 40°C), for example, AW 32 or HO 150
hydraulic oil, or a non-synthetic transmission fluid if the fluid level is low. Change all of the fluid if it darkens,
becomes gritty, or turns a milky color, which indicates that water is present. You may use a synthetic transmission
fluid if you flush the system with the synthetic fluid before filling the reservoir.
Maintenance: If changes from satisfactory condition are noticed during an inspection, restore the ramp by
repairing it and/or installing necessary replacement parts before returning the ramp to service. Perform
maintenance on the ramp to ensure that it remains in satisfactory condition for as long as possible.
ONLY qualified persons should perform maintenance on the ramp.
1) Remove the ramp from service by tagging it, “Out of Service.”
2) Compare the results of your most recent inspection to the RECORD OF SATISFACTORY CONDITION.
3) Restore the lifter to satisfactory condition. If you are unsure whether damage discovered during an inspection
makes the ramp unsafe to use, or for answers to any other questions about inspecting and maintaining this
device, contact Technical Service. If a part is significantly worn or rusted, it should be replaced immediately.
4) Make a dated record of all repairs, adjustments, and replacements.
