RECORD OF SATISFACTORY CONDITION
After installing the guardrail system and before putting it into service, document its condition. Take
photographs and/or videos from multiple angles, including close-ups of the guardrail sections, posts,
brackets, hardware, and labels. Collect all photographs, videos, and notes in a file to serve as a record
of the unit in satisfactory condition. Use this record for comparison during inspections. Do not use the
guardrail system unless it is in satisfactory condition. Purely cosmetic changes, like damaged
paint/powdercoat, do not constitute changes from satisfactory condition. However, touchup paint
should be applied to all affected areas as soon as damage occurs to prevent rusting and/or corrosion
from occurring.
INSPECTING & MAINTAINING THE GUARDRAIL SYSTEM
Inspections and repairs should only be performed by qualified persons. Compare the results of each
inspection to the RECORD OF SATISFACTORY CONDITION. Do not continue to use the guardrail system
unless all parts are in satisfactory condition. Replace parts that are not in satisfactory condition before
returning the unit to regular service. Never make temporary repairs of damaged or missing parts. Only
use manufacturer-approved replacement parts to restore the unit to satisfactory condition. DON’T

A. Recommended Inspections
Regular inspections are essential to ensure guardrails remain effective for as long as possible.
Conduct inspections monthly or quarterly, depending on the facility’s vehicle traffic and environmental
conditions. Perform immediate inspections after any known vehicle impact. The following inspections
are recommended:
Visual Inspection: Check for visible damage such as dents, cracks, or corrosion that could
compromise structural integrity. Inspect each guardrail section, post, and bracket for broken
welds, cracks, significant rusting or corrosion, or other damage. Make sure that all drop-in brackets
and J-brackets are securely fastened to their posts. Examine mounting brackets and guardrail
sections for significant rust or corrosion.
Fastener Check: Verify that all fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers, and anchors) are secure.
Alignment Verification: Ensure the guardrail is properly aligned and has not shifted from its
original position.
Supporting Surface: Inspect the surface around posts for signs of damage, crumbling, or other
forms of deterioration.
B. Recommended Maintenance Procedures
Maintenance ensures guardrails remain functional and durable for as long as possible. The following
procedures are recommended:
Tighten Fasteners: Regularly tighten any loose bolts, nuts, or anchors to maintain structural
stability.
Repair or Replace: Promptly repair or replace damaged guardrail sections to restore full
protective capacity. Replacement sections should only be attached to solidly-anchored posts. If
impact damage compromises post anchors (to the supporting surface), remove the post(s), repair
the surface as necessary, and reinstall the post(s) before attaching replacement guardrail
sections.
Clean Guardrail: Remove debris or corrosive substances to prevent deterioration.
Recoat or Repaint: Apply protective coatings or paint as needed (match original finish) to
prevent corrosion, especially in harsh environments.
Address all other issues revealed during an inspection. Address any issues with supporting
surface immediately.
