USING THE DRUM CARRIER
USING THIS (FORKLIFT TRUCK) FRONT END ATTACHMENT AFFECTS THE CENTER OF GRAVITY OF YOUR
LIFT TRUCK.BEFORE USING THIS DEVICE, US FEDERAL REGULATION 29 CFR 1910.178
REQUIRES YOU TO
CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER OF YOUR LIFT TRUCK TO REQUEST:
o WRITTEN APPROVAL (29 CFR 1910.178(a)(4); AND
o MARKINGS FOR THE LIFT TRUCK THAT IDENTIFY THE ATTACHMENT AND GIVE THE APPROXIMATE
WEIGHT OF THE TRUCK AND ATTACHMENT AT MAXIMUM ELEVATION WITH A LATERALLY-CENTERED
LOAD (29 CFR 1910.178(a)(5). DO NOT USE THIS DEVICE UNTIL YOUR LIFT TRUCK IS MARKED WITH
CORRECTED CAPACITY TAGS. ONLY USE THIS DEVICE WITH LIFT TRUCKS THAY HAVE BEEN MARKED WITH
CORRECTED CAPACITY TAGS.
Step 1: Insert a fork into the fork receiver. The drum carrier
should be located between the forks. Wrap the safety strap
around a part of the fork carriage. Attach the strap hook to
the strap or to the quick link without slack. The drum lifter
must not be able to slide on the fork.
Step 2: Drive to the drum and position the carrier above the
drum. Lower the carrier over the top/lid of the drum.
Step 3: Clamp the lip of the drum between the jaws. Make
sure that the lower jaw is underneath the rim. The upper
jaw must press against the inside of the rim. The side brace
should contact the side of the drum. Lift the end of the
lifting arm enough to tighten the clamp on the rim, but not
to elevate the drum, by slightly raising the fork carriage.
Step 4: Test the jaws’ grasp of the rim. Raise the drum just a
few inches above the ground. Observe the drum and
carrier for approximately 10 seconds to be certain that the
carrier has an adequate grasp on the rim. If the grasp is
adequate, proceed to the next step. Return the drum to
the ground and adjust the jaws if the grasp is inadequate.
Step 5: Transport the drum to the unloading location. Drive
slowly, particularly while turning. The drum will tend to swing
opposite the direction of a turn, so reduce speed during all
turns. The drum will swing out in front of the forklift during
braking. Apply the brakes gradually to minimize drum swing.
Step 6: Slowly lower the fork carriage. Set the drum on the
ground. Lower the carriage sufficiently to release the jaws
from the drum rim.
