SIGNAL WORDS
This manual uses SIGNAL WORDS to indicate the likelihood of personal injuries, as well as the probable
seriousness of those injuries, if the product is misused in the ways described. Other signal words call attention
to uses of the product likely cause property damage. The signal words used appear below along with the
meaning of each word.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
The most effective way to avoid injury is to exercise sound judgment when assembling, using, inspecting,
and maintaining this crane. Keep a copy of this manual with the crane at all times, such as in a plastic
pouch attached to the frame. These instructions supplement safe crane operation practices learned during
your training program and comply with ASME B30.17 for portable gantry cranes.
Electrocution could result if the crane contacts electrified wires.
DO NOT assemble, maintain, or use the crane in an area where it could contact electrified wires.
Regularly inspect electrical wiring in the area where the crane is used. DO NOT contact electrical wiring,
especially wiring with exposed conductors (damaged insulation) with the crane.
Improper or careless operation can result in serious injury or death. To reduce the risk of injury:
Operator Training: Operating without proper training can lead to misuse. Only trained, authorized
personnel should use the crane. Read and understand this manual in its entirety before using the crane.
Pre-Use Inspections: Inspect the crane and usage area before each use per INSPECTIONS instructions on
p. 22-23. Ensure the ground is clear of debris. Do not use unless in SATISFACTORY CONDITION. See RECORD
OF SATISFACTORY CONDITION, p. 21-22.
Load Capacity: Exceeding the crane’s capacity can cause collapse. Do not lift loads heavier than the
rated capacity. See SPECIFICATIONS, p. 2-4; LABELING DIAGRAM, p. 23.
Height Adjustment: Adjusting height under load or without securing components can cause structural
failure. Do not adjust height under load. Secure the hoist/trolley in the center of the I-beam and ensure
adjustment pins are fully inserted with pin stops perpendicular before use.
Stability: Unsecured cranes can move during lifting, causing load swinging or tipping. Before lifting, lock all
casters or secure the crane (e.g., with chocks) to prevent movement. Use only on even, level ground.
Environmental Hazards: Operating in high winds, on uneven or soft surfaces, or in adverse weather can
cause instability, leading to tipping. Do not use in high winds or hazardous conditions.
Suspended Loads: Standing under a suspended load can result in being struck by falling objects. Keep
clear of suspended loads and instruct others to stay clear during operation.
Personnel Safety: Lifting people or allowing climbing on the crane or load can lead to falls. Do not lift
people or allow climbing.
Operation: Using vehicles to move the crane or improper movement can cause loss of control. Move the
crane carefully by hand. Do not stand under the I-beam. Do not operate manual motions with other than
manual power.
Loading: Not centering the load can cause load swinging, leading to loss of control and serious injury.
Ensure the load is centered under the hoist per LOADING THE CRANE recommendations on p. 21.
Labels: Missing or unreadable labels can lead to misuse, causing accidents. Ensure all labels are readable
and intact. Contact Vestil for replacements if damaged or missing. See LABELING DIAGRAM, p. 23.
Modifications: Unauthorized modifications can compromise safety, leading to accidents. Do not modify
the crane without written approval from Vestil, as this voids the LIMITED WARRANTY.
Purpose: Using the crane for transportation can cause instability. Use only for lifting, not transporting loads.
Identifies a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, WILL result in DEATH or
SERIOUS INJURY. Use of this signal word is limited to the most extreme situations.
Identifies a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in DEATH or
SERIOUS INJURY.
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in MINOR or
MODERATE injury.
NOTICE
Identifies practices likely to result in product/property damage, such as operation
that might damage the crane.
