arch. Have a friend or
family member place a
book on top of the arch
bridge. What do you observe
happens to the arch when the
book is placed on top?

WHAT’S HAPPENING
An arch transforms forces that push down
on the top of it into forces that push
outward at its base. There must be either
internal or external structures which
counteract the outward forces at the
base; otherwise, the arch will collapse.
