WHAT’S HAPPENING
Earthquakes cause surface soil to move back and forth, like
the piece of paper in your experiment. This causes structures
to fall over, slide, or twist about their bases. A wide
foundation helps prevent a building from falling over, and
a flexible structure that can bend a lile instead of
breaking helps prevent a building from falling apart
during an earthquake.
