Floating magnet

A ring floats on a stick.

YOU WILL NEED

› Yellow magnet, magnet stand

PREPARATION

Before your performance, set the magnet on the

stand with the ring oriented so that it is

attracted to the base of the stand. There’s

another ring magnet hidden inside the base.

PERFORMANCE

Make the magnet bob up and down

by tapping it lightly with your ﬁnger.

Throughout the performance,

hold the stand ﬁrmly by

its base ...

Here I have

a ring.

Casually ﬂip the magnet over

with your ﬁngers.

Loosen

your thumb’s

grip on the

magnet.

It will jump up.

I’ll be using it to

show you a really

neat trick.

PAY ATTENTION …

PRESTO!

Pull the magnet oﬀ the stand.

Don’t let your audience know that

it’s a magnet.

It fits perfectly

over this stand.

In one ﬂuid movement, slide the

magnet softly back onto the stand.

Let it rest there for a moment, and

then pull it oﬀ the stand again.

Slide the magnet down

onto the stand with its

repelling side to the

boom. Hold it tight

against the base with

your thumb. It should

look just like before,

as if the magnet were

simply lying on the

boom.
