Ultraviolet ashlight
You can use the ultraviolet ashlight
(UV ashlight for short) to search
for invisible traces of evidence that
become visible under the UV light.
Lights like these are used to look for
evidence at real crime scenes. Before
you can use the lamp, you must insert
the battery. An adult should help you.
Remove the four screws on the bottom
of the ashlight with a Phillips head
screwdriver, insert the battery, and
replace the screws. To turn on the light,
slide the small switch forward.

How does the UV ashlight work?
You can examine the behavior of
various objects and materials under
UV light. In a darkened space, try
shining the light on white paper,
white clothing, reective panels
on backpacks and bicycle clothing,
colored markers, and paper money.
The UV ashlight emits some bluish
visible light and a lot of ultraviolet
light which is invisible to our eyes.
This is also sometimes called black
light. Many everyday things, such as
white clothing, reective strips, and
colored ink on paper, shine brightly in
the darkness when they are irradiated
with UV light.
Bills contain UV-luminous threads as
an anti-counterfeiting measure. You
can easily detect counterfeit money
because it does not light up in the UV
light the same way real money does.
You can read more about the security
features of money on pages 37-39.
