DID YOU KNOW?
You use your ears not just for hearing, but for balance too. Behind your eardrum,
there are three fluid-filled archways. When you move, the fluid in the archways
moves as well, and the nerves pass on the information to the brain. For example:
You’re bending too far forward — careful, you might stumble!
In the spinning experiment, you scrambled up
your brain a little. When you suddenly stop,
the fluid in the archways keeps moving at first.
Your organs of balance can’t react as quickly
as you can stop yourself. Even though you’re
standing still, your brain still gets the
message: Everything’s spinning! That’s what
the dizzy feeling comes from.
