The Globe at Night
If you switch on your globe in the evening or in a darkened room, there are all sorts of remarkable
things that will show up.
In addition to nocturnal animals,
there are also some plants that
unfurl their flowers at night.
These plants, such as the yellow-
flowering evening primrose, use
light-hued and strongly perfumed
flowers to attractive nocturnal
insects and bats.
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
Nocturnal animals (animals that are active at
night) form an especially fascinating collection
of creatures. Sleeping during the day, they wait
for dusk before coming out of their hiding
places. At night, they do all the things done by
other animals that are active during the day —
in particular, looking for food and eating. Most
of all, small animal species such as mice prefer
to move around at night in order to protect
themselves from predators that hunt during the
day. But some hunters have adapted to a
nighttime rhythm as well. You can find
nocturnal animals everywhere in the world. Do
you see any?
