The Axolotl is an amphibian only found in two
lakes in Mexico. Animal species that only occur
in a small, delimited area are known as endemic
species. Can you find another animal species on
your globe with this same quality? The small
Mexican amphibian has a very special ability: If
it loses a leg, for example, it can easily grow
another one.
The cherry tree has
special significance in
Japanese culture.
When its flowers start
to bloom, the
Japanese people celebrate the end
of winter. The cherry blossom festivals last
about ten days and are celebrated not just in
Japan but in other parts of the world as well.
In the southeast Pacific lies Easter Island.
This island has become known for its
remarkable figures made out of stone. The
figures were presumably created around 600
years ago. There are around 900 of them
scattered across the island. The largest is
almost ten meters tall. Can you find any other
formations made of stone?
Cape Agulhas marks the southernmost point of
Africa and the boundary between the Atlantic
and Indian oceans. The convergence of different
ocean currents makes the waters off Cape
Agulhas very hazardous for ships. Reminders of
this can be found in the various shipwrecks
lying off this coast. Can you find another well-
known shipwreck on your globe?
