WHAT’S HAPPENING
Most plants are green! And there
is a very important reason for
that. The leaves use this green
coloring to capture sunlight and
produce sugar and oxygen from
water and air (more precisely, the
gas carbon dioxide in the air).
This process is known as
photosynthesis. It’s a hard word to
pronounce, but the process is very
important for plants and for us
humans too. The plants are able
to make new leaves with the
sugar. And we humans need the
oxygen to breathe!
To germinate, all that peas need
is the food contained inside them.
But when they grow bigger, they
need additional nutrients. They get
those nutrients from the soil, but not
from the damp paper towel. That is
why over a long period of time the
pea plant will grow better in the
soil-filled pot.
