CAUTION: Never allow the tealight candle to burn unsupervised, and observe the symbols

on the bottom of the box. Only burn the tealight while you are solving the corresponding

riddle. Do not light it ahead of time and extinguish it immediately after solving the riddle.

Be careful when sliding the tealight — hot liquid wax might slosh out. Never hold anything

above or in the ﬂame! This is NOT necessary to solve the riddle!

IMPORTANT: Do not look closely at any of the game materials before starting

the game! Do not leaf through the book yet, and do not look at the front of

the cards yet. Wait until “the game” tells you to.

In addition, you will need writing implements (ideally ball point pens, pencils, and

an eraser), one or more sheets of paper, a pair of scissors, a lighter or matches, and

a watch (ideally a stopwatch).

As an alternative, you can use the digital timer with the atmospheric soundtrack.

Paris – Monday, April 13

My dear friends,

I have finally found the entrance. After

months of searching and countless ex-

peditions, my flashlight showed me the

way. I found the secret gate to the

Carrière inexplorée, the unexplored sto-

ne quarry in the Catacombs of Paris. But something is not

quite right here. This part of the Catacombs seems a lot older

than anyone ever guessed. This is evidenced by quite a few bone

finds, some of which I have now saved in my backpack. Tomorrow,

I will risk going deeper inside – but not without my compass, of

course. This whole business gives me the creeps. I have the fee-

ling that I’m not alone down here! If you don’t hear from me by

Wednesday, open my safe deposit box at the bank (you know which

one it is!). I have taken all necessary precautions.
