a while and then started

making the dresses.

The lines look slanted,

but they’re actually

straight!” Barbie said.

“See for yourself —

hold a ruler up to one

of the gray lines.”

“Whoa! This paern

makes it look like

there are black

dots in between the

squares, but there

aren’t!” Nikki said

with amazement.

“This paern looks

like it’s twirling, but of

course it isn’t actually

moving.”

“The colors are really

deceiving in this one.

The blue and the green

look diﬀerent, but they

are the same! Fold

the paper to compare

them side by side!”

“This one has vertical

bars in seven shades.

Cover up the border

between any two bars

with your ﬁnger, and it

looks like the two bars

are the same color.”

“Here’s another

illusion where straight

lines look bent. Hold

a ruler next to the

vertical lines, and you

will see that they are

actually straight!”

“This

paern

is cool! It

looks all

wavy, like

the paern

is rippling.”

“I love this one. It

looks like the paern

is moving inward

toward the center.”

“I like this one the

best. It looks like it’s

swirling around, but

it’s not,” Nikki said.

“That would make

an amazing dress

paern.”
