SEASONAL STORAGE
If you will not operate the vehicle for 60 days or longer, such as during the
winter, storing it properly will help prevent damage to the fuel system, electrical
system, engine, suspensions, tires and body. During extended storage periods,
maintain tire pressure and battery voltage at the recommended levels.
IMPORTANT
If the battery goes unused for more than 30 days, connect the battery to a
charger or disconnect the battery from the vehicle. If the battery goes unused
for 60 days, the battery may be damaged and rendered unable to recharge.
1. Choose a dry, well-ventilated storage location away from direct sunlight,
preferably a garage or similar structure. The structure should have a firm,
flat, clean surface free of oil and gasoline. The structure should have a
relatively constant and moderate temperature.
2. Proper storage starts with cleaning, washing and waxing the hood, chassis,
upholstery and plastic parts. Be sure that corrosive salt and acids are
removed from surfaces before beginning preservation with waxes and rust
inhibitors (grease, oil or paint). Clean and touch up with paint any rusted or
previously painted surfaces.
3. Apply a light coat of oil or grease to all bushings, spindle shafts and tie rod
ends.
4. Change the engine oil. Start the engine and allow it to idle just long enough
to circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
5. Store the vehicle with a full tank of non-oxygenated fuel. If non-oxygenated
fuel is unavailable, a commercial oxygenated fuel is acceptable. Note that
most oxygenated fuels contain ethanol. Since ethanol is hydroscopic,
oxygenated fuel will absorb water vapor during storage. Completely filling the
tank fuel minimizes the exposure and absorption of water vapor during
seasonal storage. Fuel to be treated with a fuel stabilizer, Polaris Advanced
Fuel Treatment additive 2881416 or equivalent.
6. Remove the spark plugs. Spray a light amount of engine fogging oil into each
cylinder to prevent rust. Reinstall the plugs.
7. Make sure the coolant quality and level in the system is adequate for freeze
protection during storage.
8. Apply a metal protectant to shock absorber shafts or any exposed metal to
prevent corrosion.
9. Separate electrical connector blocks and clean corrosive build-up from
connectors. Replace worn or frayed electrical wire and connectors.
10.Prepare the battery for storage.
