be removed from the refrigeration system or it must
be isolated (by closing valves) in a part of the
system remote from the leak. The system must be
purged with oxygen-free nitrogen before and
during soldering.
Removal and drainage
When accessing the refrigerant circuit for repair or
other purposes, conventional methods should be
used. However
, it is important that good practice is
always followed, as flammability must be taken into
account. The following procedure should be fol-
lowed as a minimum:
n Remove refrigerant.
n Purge the circuit with inert gas.
n Discharge the gas mixture.
n Purging again with inert gas.
n Open the circuit by cutting or soldering.
This process must be repeated until a suitable
measuring device can no longer detect an ignitable
mixture.
The refrigerant charge is to be prepared in the cor-
responding processing cylinders. The system
should be “purged” with pure nitrogen to ensure
the safety of the system. This process may be
repeated several times. Compressed air or oxygen
should not be used for this purpose.
Purging can be achieved by placing the system
under vacuum with oxygen-free nitrogen, con-
tinuing to fill until working pressure is reached,
then venting to atmosphere and finally placing
under vacuum. This process must be repeated
until all the refrigerant has been removed from the
system.
When the last fill of oxygen-free nitrogen is used,
the system should be vented to atmospheric pres-
sure to enable work. This is absolutely necessary if
soldering work has to be carried out on the pipe.
Ensure that the output for the vacuum pump is not
located near ignition sources and that ventilation is
provided.
Filling process
In addition to the usual filling procedures, the fol-
lowing requirements must be observed:
n It must be ensured that the refrigerants are not
contaminated when the equipment is being
filled. Hoses or wires should be as short as
possible to minimise the amount of refrigerant
in them.
n Cylinders should be stored upright.
n Ensure that the cooling system is earthed
before charging the system with refrigerant.
n When the filling process is complete, the
system is to be labelled (if this has not already
been done).
n Extreme caution is advised to avoid overfilling
the cooling system.
Before refilling the system, the pressure should be
checked with oxygen-free nitrogen. The system
should be checked for leaks at the end of the filling
process, but before commissioning. A control leak
test must be carried out before leaving the site.
Labelling
The unit should be labelled to indicate that it has
been taken out of service and that the refrigerant
has been drained. The labelling should be dated
and signed. Ensure that there are labels on the
unit indicating that it contains flammable refrig-
erant.
T
ransportation of units which contain combus-
tible refrigerants
National provisions must be observed.
Storage of units which contain combustible
refrigerants
National provisions must be observed.
Transportation without the original packaging
If the units are transported without the original
packaging, they must be packed in such a way that
mechanical damage is prevented. The units must
be transported upright.
WARNING!
The unit should be stored in a room without any
ignition sources in continuous operation (e.g.
open flames, a gas appliance or an electric
heater in operation).
WARNING!
The unit must be installed, operated and stored
in a room with a floor area greater than 13.6 m
