This guide contains the basic information required to install and use your
Confidence 20A loudspeakers.
Safety Information
Before you begin, please read the “Important Safety Instructions”
document.
Note on floor spikes!
Some Dynaudio loudspeakers and loudspeaker stands are supplied with
floor spikes.
X Always take great care when installing floor spikes or when moving
loudspeakers or stands with floor spikes fitted.
X Floor spikes are designed for use on carpets and rugs. They pierce the
carpet to rest on the floor surface beneath to provide a solid foundation.
X Floor spikes can also be used on non-carpeted floors with metallic discs
(such as coins) placed between the spike tips and the floor.
Unpacking
X Unpack your loudspeakers and save the packaging for future use.
If the loudspeakers are cold or hot from storage or transport, allow
time for them to acclimatise to room temperature.
Positioning the loudspeakers
A stereo pair of loudspeakers and the primary listening position should
ideally form an equilateral triangle. In other words, the distance between
the loudspeakers should be approximately equal to the distance from the
loudspeakers to the listener.
Connecting Mains Power
The Dynaudio Confidence 20A will automatically adapt to the mains voltage
in your territory. Use a three-conductor earthed power cord such as the
one supplied with the loudspeakers. Be aware however that it may be a
requirement in your territory to use an alternative certified power cable.
X Always use an earthed mains connection with this equipment
and always observe local safety regulations.
Audio Connections
NOTE: The Confidence 20A incorporates an internal power amplifier so it is
imperative that the connected signal source or preamplifier provides control
of volume. Some signal sources allow you to bypass their volume control,
so it is of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT VOLUME CONTROL IS
ALWAYS ENGAGED before the loudspeakers are connected.
The Confidence 20A provides inputs for both balanced analogue and digital
signal sources. Connect your audio source to the desired input (Digital in or
Analogue in).
X The Confidence 20A AES3 digital output socket (Digital out) can be
used to daisy-chain two loudspeakers.
X If the desired audio source only offers unbalanced (RCA Phono)
analogue or Digital coax outputs, use the RCA Phono output with an
RCA Phono to XLR adaptor or an RCA Phono to XLR connection cable.

Digital Channels
If the Confidence 20A AES3 Digital input is used, select the appropriate
channel assignment for each loudspeaker by setting the Digital channel
switch to “Left” or “Right”.
Sample-rate Conversion
For the highest possible sound quality, set the Sample-rate conversion switch
to “O”. This ensures that the sample rate and resolution from the source
are left untouched by Confidence 20A signal processing. In other words:
The internal sample rate of the Confidence 20A adapts to the signal source.
Should the sample rate and resolution change between tracks from the
signal source, the loudspeakers will mute for a short time while adjusting to
Congratulations on your purchase of the Dynaudio Confidence 20A loudspeakers.

the new sample rate. To obtain gapless playback without muting between
tracks, set the Sample-rate conversion switch to “On”. The incoming signal
then will undergo sample rate conversion to the default sample rate of the
Confidence 20A to ensure continuous playback.
Analogue Input Settings
Initially set the Confidence 20A Analogue sensitivity switch to “Low”.
If the analogue input signal is too quiet, select the “Mid” or “High” options.
If the Confidence 20A front panel Y indicator flashes red to indicate analogue
input overload, the Analogue sensitivity setting should be reduced.
Sound Balance Settings
The subjective sound balance of loudspeakers can change slightly (typically
to become smoother) once they have been run-in (i.e. when they have been
used for a while). Consequently, adjusting the Confidence 20A sound balance
may be better undertaken after the loudspeakers have been in use for a while.
Experiment with adjusting the Sound Balance control to “Dark”, “Neutral”
and “Bright” to see how this aects their tonality. Over time you will find a
setting that suits your environment and preferences.
Position Settings
The proximity of the Confidence 20A loudspeakers to room boundaries will
aect their subjective tonality. The following guide can be used as a starting
point for setting the Position control.
X If a loudspeaker is located more than 50 cm (20 in) from any wall, use the
“Free” setting.
X If a loudspeaker is located closer than 50 cm (20 in) to one wall use the
“Wall” setting.
X If a loudspeaker is located closer than 50 cm (20 in) to two walls (i.e. a
corner), use the “Corner” setting.
These recommendations are general guidelines only. There may be other
room acoustic factors that influence the sound of your Confidence 20A
loudspeakers, so listen and use the settings that best suit your room and
personal preferences.
Light
The Y indicator illumination on front of the stand can be adjusted using the
Light control.
X “Off”: The indicator will always be off.
X “Dim”: When the loudspeaker is active, the indicator will illuminate dimly.
When the loudspeaker is inactive the indicator will switch off.
X “On”: When the loudspeaker is active, the indicator will illuminate with
full brightness. When the loudspeaker is inactive the indicator will
switch off.
Front Y Indicator
The “Y” indicator on the front of the loudspeaker has multiple functions.
X White: Power is on (depending on Light control setting).
X Flashing red (in sync with the signal): There is signal clipping at the
analogue input. In this case reduce the Analogue sensitivity setting, and/
or reduce the volume control on the audio signal source/preamplifier.
X Pulsing red rapidly: Thermal protection is activated. This will also
automatically reduce the loudspeaker volume. In this case reduce
the volume of the source/preamplifier or, preferably, switch off the
loudspeakers by disconnecting them from mains power until they
have cooled.
