10. For most government ID photos, e.g. US passport, the following requirements apply. Check local requirements for
other ID templates.
Taken with the subject’s full face showing towards the camera.
Taken with a neutral facial expression (preferred) and with both eyes open.
Taken in clothing that the subject would wear on a daily basis:
Uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform, and camouflage attire should not be worn in photos except in the case
of religious attire that is worn daily.
The subject may only wear a hat or head covering if they wear it daily for religious purposes. Their full face must be
visible and any head covering cannot obscure the hairline or cast shadows on the face.
Eyeglasses are not accepted unless needed for medical reasons (medical certificate may be required).
Headphones, wireless hands-free devices or similar items are not acceptable in the photo.
Use the following guidelines when taking passport photos:
Place the subject in front of a white or off-white background with no texture or pattern.
Tech Tip:
When taking photos for a tall rectangular templates, the camera can be rotated 90 degrees to the
portrait orientation. Be sure the camera aspect ratio is set to 4:3 or similar rectangular setting.
The IDW system also supports the camera image aspect ratio of 1:1 for easier framing of square
ID template photos.
The center mark of the camera LCD in most cases should be at eye level or centered on the
bridge of the nose.
Always keep the subject's head well within the guideline oval to ensure there's enough whitespace
surrounding the subject for the IDW processor to format and crop it into the ID template.
