12.2 Determination of the safety requirements
Once the total refrigerant in the system has been determined, use the flowchart below to establish the R32 safety requirements.
The flowchart shows the different scenarios from a safety point of view, considering the total system charge of the larger refrigerant circuit (m
c
),
the smallest room area, the total conditioned space area (A
tot
), and the area of installation location (A
inst
) in case of indoor installations.

R32 safety measures required.
(See chapter " 11.7 Air handling unit")
Install supply and return air isolation
dampers on the air handling unit.
Check the minimum supply airflow rate of
the air handling unit.
(Refer to Fig. 2)
No R32 safety measures required.
No need to install supply and return
isolation dampers in the air handling unit.
No need to check the minimum supply
airflow rate of the air handling unit
Short-circuit jumper needs to be
connected to T5T6.
No action required.
Continuous mechanical extraction in the
installation location is required.

Continuous mechanical
extraction is required in every
room served by the air
handling unit.

1 A
tot
= Total conditioned space area
A
tot
is the sum of the floor areas of all the spaces connected by ducts to the air handling unit. Spaces where the airflow can be limited by zoning
dampers, must NOT be included in the determination of A
tot
.
2 A
min_room
Required minimum room area (A
min_room
is directly related to the total system charge and is determined according to figure 1)
3 A
min
Minimum A
tot
or A
inst
to prevent mechanical extraction
(A
tot
and A
inst
are directly related to the total system refrigerant charge and are determined according to Figures 3b or 3a respectively)
4 A
inst
Installation space area
5 The lower edge of the openings extracting air from the room cannot be more than 100mm above the floor.
Note: In case the air handling unit is installed indoors, see figure 3a to determine if additional ventilation in the installation space is required.
Note: In case of air handling units consisting of multiple modules, the space with a ventilation module connected to a DX module in such a way
that potential leakage could flow into the space served by the ventilation module must meet the same R32 safety requirements as the space
served by the DX module.
