Materials that can be Used in your Microwave Oven
Utensils Observations
Aluminium foil Only for covering. Small pieces of aluminium foil can be used to cover
the thin parts of meat or poultry and prevent over-cooking. An electric
arc may form if the foil is too close to the walls of the oven. The foil
must be at least 2.5 cm away from the oven walls.
Browning dish Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions. The bottom of the browning
dish must be at least 5 cm above the revolving plate. Incorrect use
may cause the revolving plate to break.
Dishes Microwave-compatible only. Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions.
Do not use cracked or chipped dishes.
Jars Always remove the lid. Only use them to heat food very slightly. Most
jars are not heat-resistant and can break.
Glassware Special glasses for ovens only. Check there is no metal. Do not use
cracked or chipped dishes.
Oven cooking bags Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not close the bag with a
metal tag. Pierce to allow steam to escape.
Paper plates and
cups
Only to be used for very short cooking/heating. Do not leave the oven
unattended during cooking.
Paper towels Use them to cover your food during heating and to absorb fat. Use
them under surveillance and only for very short cooking.
Greaseproof paper Use it as a cover to prevent splashes or “en papillotte” for steam
cooking.
Plastic Only use cling film for microwaves. Adhere to the manufacturer's
instructions. The plastic should carry the note “Microwave-compatible”.
Some plastic containers melt when the food they contain is hot.
“Cooking bags” and hermetically sealed plastic bags must be slit,
pierced or opened, as indicated on the packaging.
Cling film Only use cling film for microwaves. Use it to cover your food during
cooking to preserve the humidity. Do not allow the cling film to come
into contact with the food.
Wax paper Use it as a cover to prevent splashes and preserve humidity.
