1.1 Introduction
Based on IEC 61850-3, a standard for the design of electrical substation automation,
which defines communication between all Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) and
other related equipment from the process level (data acquisition, sensors, and actua-
tors) to the bay level (protection, monitoring, and control tasks) and up to the station
level (HMI/SCADA). Advantech’s ECU-4784 Series can operate as a smart substa-
tion station level communication server, an HMI/SCADA workstation, a remote con-
trol station, a cybersecurity server, and an environmental status monitoring station.
System integrators can thereby design an optimized digital substation while allowing
energy operators to deliver electricity which is more secure, reliable, economical, and
efficient.
Advantech’s ECU-4784 Series is certified by IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 to meet
the harsh and critical requirements in smart grid automation. It provides high perfor-
mance and reliable functionality to meet the most critical computing applications and
helps reduce project deployment and maintenance costs. It supports remote monitor-
ing and diagnosis for remote device connectivity to enhance management and main-
tenance efficiency. It is easy to expand domain I/O with its modular design, and it
protects the system while meeting critical security application requirements.
High-Performance Computing Platforms for Power and Energy Automation
Applications
High-performance computing processors meet the most critical computing appli-
cations by utilizing Intel’s VT-d technology, which can run multiple software
applications. Energy operators can leverage virtual machine (VM) resources on
the ECU-4784 to reduce project deployment costs.
A highly integrated, all-in-one server platform to enhance smart substation sta-
tion-level project deployment efficiency by integrating HMI visualization, moni-
toring, and control with the data concentrator and protocol converter to complete
all station-level tasks. These functions are implemented through the different
data collection gateways and the SCADA workstation.
Certification for Robust and Reliable Systems
IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certification represent the highest reliability,
designed to withstand vibration, electrical surges, fast transients, and extreme
temperatures.
The ECU-4784 Series supports TÜV IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certification.
The ECU-4784 has a higher standard than other embedded automation control-
lers and contributes to greater reliability and stability. This makes it suitable for
any global power and energy (P&E) automation market and harsh environ-
ments.
The ECU-4784 Series is designed for applications in substations where it is sub-
jected to significant electrical interference. Equipped with isolated power and
isolated communication ports, the ECU-4784 Series has high resistance to elec-
trical noise. It has been proven that it can work well in substations, but it is also
suitable for other harsh applications.
